Winans Academy of Performing Arts, K- 8, has a cohesive plan for instruction and learning that is based on and aligned with the approved standards and expectations from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). MDE provides standards and expectations for the academic program, the performing arts program, a physical and health education program, and a technology program.
The Michigan K-8 academic curriculum consists of Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE) and detailed learning objectives which are called benchmarks. The academic content standards provide rigorous expectations of what students should know and be able to do in the subject areas of English language arts, social studies, and mathematics and science kindergarten through the twelfth grade. The corresponding benchmarks guide in enhancing Winans accountability on the Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP). The K-8 English language arts and mathematics GLCE are nationally recognized.
MDE’s expectation is that all K-8 students should achieve at the basic level in each of the visual, performing and applied arts discipline. Michigan art education curriculum consist of expectations and standards for music, theatre, dance, and visual arts.
Community Building occurs in every classroom to help students socially develop by building positive relationships through sharing experiences and resolving conflicts.
There is nothing more important than becoming an avid reader. Parents and students, please take at least 20 minutes every day to read books that will satisfy your curiosity about the world around you. Research states (DesMarais, 2018) that reading increases your vocabulary, improves your ability to understand the mental state of others, lowers your stress level, makes you self-confidant, changes the circuitry of the brain, and is a habit practiced by successful people. Let’s make a goal to read at least two books each week.
This is the website which they can put on the website for Summer Reading Lists from Birth to 8th grade.
